Meet a Savage Firefighter
Meet Kyle Jacket.
How long have you been a Savage Firefighter?
It will be six years in July.
What made you want to become a firefighter?
As a kid growing up, I was always fascinated with firefighters and other “helper jobs”. In my junior year in high school, I joined the Mdewakanton Public Safety’s Firefighter Explorer program with a couple of buddies, and that decision ended up changing my life.
What is your day job?
I work a couple of different jobs as an EMT and as a caregiver for older adults. I also come in now and then to help the Fire Chief with paperwork and other administrative tasks.
What do you like to do when you are not working or volunteering?
I love listening to music and playing drums. You can usually find me jamming out to bands like Metallica and Alice In Chains, but I also dig Taylor Swift, Kenny Loggins, and old honky-tonk music from the ‘50s. My new thing lately has been working on my 1992 Pontiac Sunbird convertible.
What do you like most about firefighting?
Firefighting has allowed me to serve my community by solving problems and making human connections with people on what’s oftentimes the worst day of their life. It’s by far the most gratifying thing I’ve ever been involved with. It’s also just plain fun! It’s a privilege to work in an environment where your co-workers are genuinely some of your closest friends.
What would you say to someone considering becoming a firefighter?
Do it! The training and time commitment is huge and something you need to fully understand going in, but it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do with your life.
