(April 1, 2008)-- The Savage Police Department and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) will observe National Missing Children’s Day on May 25. The Savage Police Department encourages parents to participate in the Take 25 program, sponsored by NCMEC, by taking 25 minutes on May 25 to talk with their children about child safety and wellness. “We are excited about our partnership with the Savage Police Department and other community First proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, National Missing Children’s Day serves as an annual reminder to the nation that child protection must be a national priority. “National Missing Children’s Day calls attention to the estimated 2,185 children reported missing every day in this country,” said Allen. "Although the vast majority of these children are found quickly, we must keep hope alive for the many who are still missing and use this opportunity to educate families about how to keep their children safer from abduction and exploitation." One in nearly six missing children is recovered as a direct result of NCMEC’s photo-distribution program. Therefore, public safety officials urge the public to pay close attention to posters and photographs of missing children. In addition, NCMEC encourages parents and guardians to regularly practice good safety measures by following the important safety tips noted below:

MVTA Board Elects Officers for 2008 Burnsville, Minn. (January 24, 2008) – The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) Board of Directors elected officers for 2008 at its organizational meeting on Jan. 23. Elizabeth Kautz, Mayor of Burnsville, was elected Chair of the MVTA Board. Jon Ulrich, Scott County Commissioner, was elected Vice Chair. Ruth Grendahl, Apple Valley City Councilmember, was re-elected Treasurer; and Jane Victorey, Savage City Councilmember, was elected Secretary. Margaret Schreiner of Eagan was re-appointed member at-large; Wally Lyslo of Burnsville was re-appointed at-large alternate. Other members of the Board include: William Droste, Mayor of Rosemount; Meg Tilley, Eagan City Councilmember; and Will Branning, Dakota County Commissioner. New ex-officio members include David Pritzlaff, Farmington Councilmember, and Peter Herlofsky, Farmington City Administrator. The MVTA Board also adopted its meeting calendar for the year: meetings will take place at 4:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The February meeting will be held at Casper’s Cherokee Sirloin Room in Eagan in conjunction with the MVTA Driver-of-the-Year ceremony. Meetings will be held at the Eagan Bus Garage, 3600 Blackhawk Road. The MVTA is the public transportation provider for the businesses and residents of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount and Savage. Burnsville, Minn. (Jan. 25, 2008) – The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) experienced record ridership in 2007, with milestones including providing our 25 millionth ride in February, and ending the year up 5.6 percent above 2006 ridership levels at just under 2.5 million boardings. MVTA express ridership grew by 4.6 percent, according to MVTA Chair and Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz. “Our express ridership increase was particularly significant,” Kautz said, “because we had no increase in capacity on our buses, and many of our park & ride facilities are over capacity.” Minneapolis express ridership grew by 4.9 percent, while St. Paul ridership grew a modest 1.9 percent. The largest ridership increases were on local routes, and Kautz said that local ridership grew 8.5 percent, despite the elimination of Route 466 and the consolidation of two routes (440 and 442) into a single route (441) serving Apple Valley on Saturdays. Burnsville (Route 444) and Eagan (Route 445) residents saw the largest growth, with Sunday service up 21 percent. “We are pleased to provide this service to our residents,” Kautz said, “many of whom are transit dependent and require the bus system to get to work, church or to make other trips on the weekends.” “These changes are consistent with the pattern of the last few years,” said Beverley Miller, MVTA Executive Director. “We believe that local ridership is heavily dependent on the cost of driving, while express ridership is also dependent on the cost of downtown parking,” Miller said. “Our significant increase in ridership clearly shows that our continued commitment to providing gh quality local bus service is being met with strong acceptance by our communities.” “We expect the growth to continue in 2008,” Miller said, “with the high price of gas, concerns about congestion, the proposed system upgrades planned as part of the Urban Partnership Agreement (UPA) awarded to the region, and a greater awareness of the environmental advantages to riding the bus.” She continued, “We are also looking forward to the implementation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the Cedar Avenue and I-35W corridors, which we believe will only spur additional ridership growth because of better service to our communities.” MVTA is the public transportation provider for residents and businesses of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount, and Savage. Call (952) 882-7500 for transit information or visit the MVTA web-site at www.mvta.com. -30- |
